The Opal Serpent Fergus Hume 9781442989894 Books
This is the first Fergus Hume book I have read but it will certainly not be the last! The plot is woven around a brooch that is a coiled snake set with precious stones. However, the brooch's value as jewelry is not what makes it valuable to the people who wish to possess it.
The opal serpent was part of a murder that took place over twenty years before the story begins. And it is used again in the current murder.
Hume weaves a tale of murder, intrigue, larceny, and love around all levels of London society, from street urchins to aristocrats.
THE OPAL SERPENT has shades of Dickens at some times but the bleakness, despair, and hopelessness that dominate his works are not so prevalent in this one of Hume's.
To reiterate my title, an excellent read!

The Opal Serpent Fergus Hume 9781442989894 Books Reviews
A good book, old style of writing but enjoyable to me. Would recommend to anyone who likes old books, enjoy!
There is plenty of scoundrelry and sadistic murder here, tied together with a wide assortment of suspects and conspirators. I did suspect the killer, but suspense was maintained to the last eventful pages.
There was never a dull moment in reading this book. The mystery and suspense just kept going on until the denouement at the end. An excellent read for mystery lovers, especially those who cherish novels of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Gave it only 4 stars because first half of book was boring. But after the murder, and the suspicious characters (which continued to grow throughout the book), and the search for the murderer, I couldn't put the book down.
I read Hume's "Murder in a Hansom Cab" and thought it was just about the dumbest novel ever, stupid plot, annoying characters, so melodramatic I wanted to scream. But, since he is credited as being one of the originators of the mystery novel genre, I thought I'd give him another whack, and am pleased I did.
Although full of fantastical coincidences, this novel is well written, humorous, with rounded, likable characters who are ready to just jump in and take charge. Another reviewer mentions "Dickensian", even. I'll buy that description. You root for the hero and heroine, laugh at the nursemaid and her "irresistible" fiancee, even the villains are entertaining, and after reading this book, I also realized that lawyer jokes (those "other" villains) are not something new to my generation.
The opening chapter, where young man leaves bullying father to make his own way in the world is entertaining, pointed and funny, and the final denoument is every bit its equal, though in a cold and thoroughly chilling way. The significance of the opal serpent brooch is rather astonishing, and makes one think, perhaps our forefathers weren't such fainting violets after all. I am, though. It just utterly shocked me, and made me a bit queasy.
Great read, highly recommended, and at the price, why not?!
The story starts out slow but improves. There's too much evil in it for my taste. Parts of the story do not line up either. I have read some of his other books but am not a big fan.
