Vanity Fair has always been one of my favorite books, but I'd never read anything else written by Thackeray. It recently occurred to me that some of his other works might be available as Kindle Classics, and sure enough, a quick search turned up this gem. Originally written as a series of columns for Punch magazine, these observations on human nature are just as true and relevant as they were over 150 years ago - and just as funny too! A quick read. History buffs and students of the Victorian era will find this contemporary description of the period to be particularly interesting.Product details

It is what it is a look into class mannerisms and attitudes of that time.
Different. Easy read.
I really enjoyed this book. Unlike the previous reviewer, I found it totally enjoyable and informative. It is not a book of jokes it's mostly satire, and is amusing rather than funny, though I did laugh out loud a few times. What surprised me was that so many of these snobs still exist in the 21st century! The author says, "It is impossible for ANY Briton not to be a snob in some degree."
The book is a collections of articles Thackeray wrote for Punch, and is typical of that magazine. Thackeray's definition is, 'He who meanly admires mean things is a snob'. He starts at the top, by defining and describing Royal Snobs, Aristocratic Snobs, respectable snobs, city snobs, military snobs, clerical snobs, university snobs, literary snobs, etc, etc., and so descends to the lower classes, which are just as full of snobs as the upper. I found myself in this book! I believe myself to be a humble downright person, but Thackeray's perception is very acute. I would challenge any Brit to read this and NOT find himself.
A really good read. If you like 'Spitting Image' you'll like this.
This is a year's worth of weekly columns written for Punch magazine. I actually laughed out loud at some of the descriptions of various characters and Thackeray's snarky comments. Aside from the historical/cultural circumstances--"snobs" as pretentious, shallow hypocrites are universal archetypes and most of Thackeray's observations are as relevant today as ever...
It is curious that whenever a great writer writes, his audience expects another great work. That may seem like a reasonable assumption but it is a fallacy. A competent writer knows what he wants and what he is accomplishing. This collection of sketches is not meant to be a prequel to "Vanity Fair," or anything else. They are written to entertain and to present Thackeray's observations of the human condition, while displaying his wit. They are meant to entertain, and in this he succeeds.
It is not necessary to slavishly read each chapter in order or indeed all. Select what group you are particularly interested in or of which you may be a member and savor the spirit in which it was written There was a time when gentlemen did have an audience.
Who knew that a book written so long ago could have so much relevance today? Thackeray had me in stitches most of the time, and despite the fact that I did not always know all the references pertinent to his era, it did not prevent me from getting the jist of it all. I felt like I was talking a walk in London 150 years ago! His take on human behaviour is very precise. I have encouraged all my friends to read this little gem and believe this would indeed be very good movie material! I would love to see the scenarios in this book adapted to contemporary life in Hollywood!
This piece of trash sold as “book” is a shocking copy, printed by illiterates missing letter, comas/period/exclamation signs thrown mindlessly all over the place, chaotic and incorrect use of capital letters, messed up sentences, many, many, MANY messed up words “coftee” instead of “coffee”, “Trench Revolution” instead of “French Rev....”. It’s unbelievable!!!!!!
